The 1-Year Thailand Non-Immigrant Visa that was previously available to certain nationalities, including UK citizens, is no longer issued by Royal Thai Embassies or Consulates. British nationals who wish to stay in Thailand for longer periods must now apply for other visa types that match the purpose of their stay.

Fortunately, Thailand offers several long-term visa options suitable for UK citizens, depending on their lifestyle, age, financial status, or purpose of stay.

Long-Term Visa Options for UK Citizens

UK passport holders looking to stay in Thailand long-term may apply for the following visa types:

Thailand Elite Visa
Long-Term Resident Visa Thailand
Thai Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O/A or O Extension)
Thai Marriage Visa (Non-Immigrant O Extension)
Thai Business Visa / Work Visa (Non-Immigrant B)
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV Visa Thailand)

Best Options for Stays Longer Than One Year

For UK citizens who want a convenient, renewable, and legally secure stay in Thailand, the following two visa programs are the most practical:

1. Thailand Elite Visa

Available to members of the Thailand Privilege Programme.
Classified under the Privilege Entry Visa (PE), allowing residency for 5, 10, or 20 years depending on the membership package.
Renewable 5-year multiple-entry visa with a 1-year stay per entry.
No visa runs or border crossings every 90 days.
Thai Elite staff assist with 90-day reporting, airport fast-track, and other VIP services.

2. LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident Visa)

Allows UK citizens to stay in Thailand for up to 10 years (issued as 5 years + 5-year renewal).
More affordable than the Elite Visa but has stricter requirements involving income, investments, or professional qualifications.
Categories for eligibility include:
- Wealthy Global Citizens
- Wealthy Pensioners
- Work-from-Thailand Professionals
- Highly-Skilled Professionals
Applicants can include up to 4 dependents (spouse and children).

One-Year Extension of Stay from a 90-Day Visa

UK citizens can enter Thailand with a 90-day Non-Immigrant Visa and extend it to 1 year if they qualify under the following categories:

Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O / O-A)

For individuals aged 50 and above.
Requires an initial Non-Immigrant O Visa before converting it to a 1-year Retirement Visa.
Renewable annually, allowing long-term residence as long as requirements are met.

Marriage Visa (Non-Immigrant O Extension)

For UK citizens married to a Thai national.
Requires a legally registered marriage.
Start with a 90-day Non-Immigrant O Visa and extend it to a 1-year Marriage Visa.
Renewable annually and allows the holder to apply for a work permit.

Business / Work Visa (Non-Immigrant B)

For UK nationals working or conducting business in Thailand.
A 90-day Non-Immigrant B Visa can be extended to a 1-year Work Visa with proper employment documentation and a work permit.

DTV Visa Thailand (Destination Thailand Visa)

The DTV Visa is one of Thailand’s newest visa programs designed for medium to long-term stays, especially appealing to digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and individuals who wish to stay in Thailand while engaging in permitted activities.

Key features of the DTV Visa include:

Valid for 5 years, with each permitted stay of up to 180 days per entry (can be extended once for another 180 days).
Targeted towards digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, long-stay visitors, or individuals keen to experience Thai culture, wellness, and lifestyle.
Does not allow formal employment in Thailand, but remote work for overseas companies or freelance work for foreign clients is permitted.
Applicants must show proof of financial stability, such as a minimum bank balance or income requirements (e.g. around USD 20,000 equivalent).
Can include legal dependents, such as a spouse and children under 20.
Offers a simpler alternative to the LTR Visa and is more affordable than the Thailand Elite Visa.

This visa is ideal for UK citizens who want a flexible, long-term stay without needing to meet high investment or retirement requirements.
